A trillion dollars in debt and a $5 tax cut, why did we expect anything else from the Albanese government. 22 years ago, Peter Costello was mocked for his $5 a week tax cuts that amounted then to a sandwich and a milkshake, Jim Chalmers is being reminded of his $5 a week cut, which today is 3/4 of a cup of coffee, half a beer in a pub or 2/3 of a Big Mac.
Despite all the spending like drunken sailors, what mission statement, what great nation building plan, what have we got to show for it, apart from higher energy prices, higher cost of living, but cheaper prescription drugs and no Covid Royal Commission.
This is the fallout from Jim Chalmers, in his fourth budget, on the eve of Albo calling an election, the one that may see him thrown from office after a single term as prime minister. But he is not alone and would join Gough Whitlam, Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard, along with Malcolm Turnbull and Tony Abbott as other one termers in a long line of failed UniParty prime ministers since John Howard lost his job and seat in 2007.
Part of the reason for the budget’s gloomy debt outlook is based on future resources prices as forecast by treasury.
Collapsing iron ore and coal prices are tipped to hammer the national budget in coming years.

Iron ore currently makes up 21 per cent of Australia’s total value of goods and service exports in 2023-2024.
Treasury also estimates metallurgical coal will decline to $US140 a tonne and thermal coal will fall to $US70.
